Nostalgic Nintendo Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield Review

Author:

Allow me to take you on a nostalgic trip to a long-forgotten blog post that somehow never made its way onto the website. It all began with a generous gesture from Nintendo, who sent us the latest Pokémon Nintendo Switch games for review. The real highlight of the story, however, is how these games have become an enduring source of joy for my daughter. They’ve not only left a lasting impression but have also found a cherished place in the ever-growing collection of Nintendo Switch games for my 9-year-old. Thank you again, Nintendo.

Greetings, everyone! Your friendly guest blogger, Jasmine, checking in! Recently, I was fortunate to receive a pair of Pokémon games courtesy of Nintendo: Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. And, let me assure you, they are an absolute blast! The basic premise of both games is that you’re playing as a character who is the rival of your best friend and neighbor, Hop. Both of you are competing to be the world’s best Pokemon trainer and have the strongest Dynamax Pokemon.

I’ve only had the opportunity to dive into the world of Pokémon through one or two games. Nevertheless, these limited encounters with  Pokémon have left an indelible mark on my gaming experiences, making them stand out as the most memorable and enjoyable games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. One of the best things about these games is the sense of camaraderie and friendship that develops between you and your Pokémon.

My favorite feature is being able to set up a camp with your Pokemon.  At the campsite, you can use the Switch controllers to play fetch with your Pokemon talk to them, and have them interact with each other. You can also cook “curry” which combines different ingredients you either buy or pick up around spots. The characters are likable and have interesting dialogues and the places to explore and catch Pokemon are huge!

I’ve spent at least two hours in a single spot trying to catch all the different types of Pokemon in a certain area and trying to defeat and capture all the Dynamx Pokemon. Check out my gameplay below.

The battles are easy to follow and I found that you don’t have to have much background knowledge on Pokemon to be able to battle. Of course, you should know which Pokemon types are weaker against one another or whether your Pokemon will do well in a battle against another type of Pokemon but you can also figure this out from playing the game. The Pokemon characters themselves are so adorable and when paired with the graphics of the Nintendo Switch they look absolutely amazing!

Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this game, and it’s worth mentioning that you don’t necessarily have to purchase both versions to fully appreciate the storyline. The primary difference between these two editions is the diversity of Pokémon types held by the leaders you aim to conquer. Apart from this distinguishing factor, these games offer a wonderful gaming experience, especially if you are a newbie to Pokémon. The appeal extends to gamers of all ages, making Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield an ideal choice for individuals regardless of their stage in life. I hope you add this to your gift wish list.
